In its very essence, roulette is a game of chance. But, while it may seem uncomplicated on the surface, players quickly realize roulette is packed with intricacies and complexities that truly make this game one to remember. Are you ready to find out more?
HISTORY OF ROULETTE
One might think that roulette was a carefully thought-out invention when in actual fact, it was created when Blaise Pascal, a French physicist, was trying to create a perpetual motion machine. While his efforts were unsuccessful, his failure birthed the massively popular game we all know and love. Pascal was a known gambler, and so he designed the roulette wheel based on ‘Roly Poly’ and ‘Even-Odd’ — two well-known games in France.
Thanks to two Frenchmen, Francois and Louis Blanc, roulette took Europe by storm as they altered the roulette wheel in the 18th century. Francois and Louis made minor changes to Pascal’s original wheel, specifically to the sequence of the numbers and the addition of the single-zero pocket — although the double-zero variation was already in use, it wasn’t coined as American Roulette until casinos in North America began to favor this wheel setup over the European wheel.
By the 20th century, roulette games were introduced to online casinos, which set dozens of online roulette adaptations in motion. Nowadays, online roulette is enjoyed by thousands of players worldwide.
ONLINE ROULETTE GAMEPLAY
Players should have no trouble learning how to play roulette online; although there are many online roulette variants, the premise of the game remains the same.
At the start of an online roulette game, players must choose their bet value and what type of bet to place, with the aim of successfully predicting which number the ball will land on. Then, all you have to do is press the spin button — whichever pocket the ball lands in determines the winning number. The player wins the bet if they successfully predicted that number. One might think your odds of winning are quite slim, but that is where a good roulette strategy comes into play to help boost your chances and safeguard your bankroll.
The gameplay of live roulette is pretty similar, except players are given a specific time frame in which they must choose their bet value and place their bets. Once this time frame has expired, the dealer will spin the wheel and launch the roulette ball in the opposite direction.
Bear in mind that there are many online roulette variants available and so, there may be slight changes in gameplay. But, you can always check out the rules of the game for more information.
ONLINE ROULETTE RULES
The rules of roulette are fairly straightforward. The first step is selecting a bet value suitable for your bankroll. Then, select the number or group of numbers you wish to place a chip on and watch the wheel spin.
Always be mindful of the table you’re playing at, as not all roulette rules can apply everywhere. The La Partage rule, for example, is only available when playing French Roulette. These additional rules are how the house edge differs between variants as well, so it is always wise to read through the rules of the game first.
INSIDE AND OUTSIDE BETS
Placing bets in roulette is where the game becomes a little more complex. There are two categories of bets: Inside bets and Outside bets. The difference between the two is simple — Inside bets are placed on the inner section of the table and Outside bets are placed on the outer area.
While these are the main two categories, Special bets, Neighbor bets, Complete bets and Favorite bets are also an option.
Inside bets include:
- Straight Up Bet — Wagering on one single number including the zero.
- Split Bet — Wagering on two numbers that lie either horizontally or vertically adjacent to each other.
- Street Bet — Wagering on three consecutive numbers at the end of the row.
- Corner Bet — Placing a bet on the intersection of four numbers in a corner where all four numbers are covered.
- Line Bet (Sixline) — Placing a bet on six consecutive numbers that form two adjacent lines.
Outside bets include:
- Column Bet — Covering 12 numbers in a column by placing a chip on the boxes marked ‘2 to 1’.
- Dozen Bet — Betting on the first, second or third dozen of numbers by placing chips on one of the boxes marked ‘1st 12’, ‘2nd 12’ or ‘3rd 12’.
- Red/Black — Betting on all red or black numbered pockets. The zero is a green pocket and is not included in this bet.
- Odd/Even — Wagering on all odd or even numbers. The zero is not covered in this bet.
- 1-18/19-36 (Low/High) — Betting on either the first 18 numbers (low bet) or the second 18 numbers (high bet). The zero is not covered in this bet.
As mentioned earlier, different variations of online roulette may come with different sets of rules and betting options. American Roulette, for instance, offers a Basket bet featuring the double zero.
ONLINE ROULETTE WHEEL
Typically, the roulette wheel features several alternating red and black numbers. The exact number of pockets depends on which version of roulette you play.
European Roulette features 37 numbered pockets ranging from one to 36, also including a single zero — the green pocket. The number of pockets on the wheel directly affects the game’s house edge which, in this case, is 2.70%.
American Roulette features 38 numbered pockets, bumping up the house edge to 5.26%. Like the European wheel, the numbers range from one to 36, but the American wheel includes a single zero and a double zero pocket.
ONLINE ROULETTE TABLE
The roulette table is pretty much the same across all variations of roulette. The only major difference is on American tables, which feature an additional field for the double zero pocket. The French table also has a slightly different layout, but these are only superficial differences that generally do not have a drastic impact on the game.
ONLINE ROULETTE GAMES
The main three variations of roulette you’ll come across include American, French and European Roulette. Let’s take a look at some key differences:
- European Roulette — European Roulette is arguably the most popular version of this online casino game. This roulette game features 37 numbered pockets and has a house edge of 2.70%.
- American Roulette — American Roulette closely resembles its European counterpart, with the only difference being the additional double-zero pocket, which increases the house advantage to 5.26%.
- French Roulette — French Roulette also does not feature any major differences except for the inclusion of two rules — the La Partage and the En Prison. Because of these additions, the house edge buckles down to 1.35% on even-money bets, slicing the European advantage in half!
Adopting a roulette strategy is key to boosting your odds, but it is always crucial you pick a betting method that is suitable for your bankroll.
Let’s start with the basics. In essence, there are two types of roulette strategies:
Non-progressive techniques are generally more geared towards novice players as they are quite straightforward. Progressive techniques can be more technical and complex as players are required to calculate bets and plan ahead. It is up to you to decide which roulette strategy is the best for you and your bankroll.
For a non-progressive betting system, it might be helpful to give the James Bond system a gander. But, if you want to kick things up a notch, the following is a list of progressive betting strategies you can try:
- Martingale Betting System
- Fibonacci Betting System
- Paroli Betting Method
- Labouchere Betting Strategy
- D’Alembert Betting Technique
These strategies can be applied to both live roulette and online roulette casino games.
